UVM Pays Tribute to Retired US Sen. Patrick Leahy: Retired Senator Patrick Leahy’s getting some well-deserved recognition from the University of Vermont. They done launched a whole program, the Leahy Institute for Rural Partnerships, to tackle the issues folks in rural areas facethings like getting good internet, clean water, and dealing with the wild weather changes brought on by climate shifts.
This institute’s now set up shop in the newly spruced-up Patrick Leahy Building at UVM. The man himself, at a ripe 83 years, retired as the third-longest-serving senator in U.S. history back in January. He’s talking about representing’ his state, making sure the young guns in Vermont got themselves a future. Vermont’s got its charms, but Leahy’s saying they got look out for the next batch coming up.
He’s eager to see what ideas and fixes come out of this program. Thinks some of them might be copied and pasted in Vermont and all over the country. They’re yammering about dealing with crazy weather caused by climate change. Vermont got hit with some serious floods after heavy rains in July, and scientists are saying these kinds of big floods are more likely with all this climate change business.
The institute’s gonna tackle other things too, like training up the workforce, keeping energy sustainable, sorting’ out housing and food production, and making communities friendly and open to all. They’re even talking about making internships and buddying up with the University of Wisconsin and Auburn University in Alabama. Them Alabamians are working on similar setups, it seems.
Some big cheese from the U.S. Department of Agricultures National Institute of Food and Agriculture tossed $9.3 million their way to make this institute happen, and o course, Senator Leahy’s been cheerleading and helping out.

He’s planning to do his business from an office at the university, where they’re keeping all his Senate records. First in his kin to hit college, Leahy’s got a mind to help young folks from them rural spots get themselves a higher education. Back in May, they named the Patrick Leahy Honors College for the man himself and even threw in a lake research vessel named after his missus, Marcelle. She’s been a big supporter of the university’s mission for a good long while.
