Shoals Students Rally to Rebuild Barn for Rescued Horses: A Heartfelt Community Endeavor

Shoals Students Rally to Rebuild Barn: COLBERT CO., Ala. Over at Muscle Shoals Career Academy, students are pitching in to revive a barn crucial for storing food for horses rescued from heart-wrenching conditions.

James Miller, the construction technology teacher, got word from community members about the barn’s disrepair and was asked to lend a hand. Without hesitation, Miller and the students committed to the cause, determined to make the barn even better than its previous state.

“We said we’d take it on,” Miller stated.

While it could have been a quick fix, Miller and his students decided to go the extra mile, opting for a complete overhaul to ensure the barn’s longevity.

“We could have put a roof on it in a couple of hours, but it was in some pretty bad shape, so what we wound up thinking was we were just going to completely redo it,” explained Miller.

This project is a win-win for the students, offering them real-world experience while making a positive impact on the community.

“So rebuilding our barn and making it suitable for storage will be amazing for us,” Miller expressed.

Whitney Hamby from the Colbert County Animal Shelter explained that they rescued numerous horses from Debra Catledge’s home, who faces several counts of animal cruelty. The shelter, faced with limited hay storage for the horses, sees the barn rebuild as a significant help for the future.

“It’s been very heartwarming,” Hamby said. “The outpouring of love and support that we’ve had for the animals here at the shelter has been amazing.”

In the tight-knit Shoals community, the show of love and support doesn’t come as a surprise to Hamby.
