New Alabama State House: SNEAK PEEK

New Alabama State House: The Alabama Legislature is on its way to a new home! The Secretary of the Senate, Clerk of the House, and Secretary of the Legislative Council updated legislators, revealing that the initial phases of construction for the five-story new State House have kicked off. Foundation work is set to commence after the new year.

Alabama temporary State House

The existing State House on Union Street, facing the State Capitol, has earned a reputation for its cramped quarters and unwelcoming atmosphere for visitors. Originally a temporary solution during the State Capitol’s renovation in the mid-80s, the legislature never returned, utilizing the former Alabama Highway Department site for their offices.

Where is the new State House going?

The upcoming State House will take the place of a parking lot previously utilized by the legislature, situated across Ripley Street, directly behind the existing State House. The proposed design includes spacious committee rooms, facilitating public observation and participation in meetings. Additionally, plans feature a 200+ space underground parking garage, along with a pavilion and greenspace, providing a welcoming environment for gatherings.
