Mobile County Aquatics Center Groundbreaking: Delayed Until 2024

Mobile County Aquatics Center Groundbreaking: Mobile, Alabama, played host to the high school swimming and diving sectional championships, a crucial event for state finals qualification. A total of 330 athletes from 30 high schools, including St. Paul’s Episcopal School, competed at Bishop State, with an additional 600 tickets sold.

Tyler Kerns, head coach for St. Paul’s Episcopal School and City of Mobile Swim Association, expressed gratitude to Bishop State for hosting. However, he highlighted the need for a larger venue as parents and athletes had to make do with camping chairs or gym bleachers due to the current natatorium’s size limitations.

Kerns emphasized the uniqueness of Bishop State as the only facility in the southern part of the state capable of hosting such events. Despite challenges, Mobile’s teams are resilient, with the hope that future swim meets can take place at the planned Mobile County Aquatics Center.

County leaders, led by Commissioner Connie Hudson, are working on securing funding for the $20 million Phase One project, which includes an outdoor 50-meter pool, an indoor instructional warm-up pool, and dive wells. Groundbreaking is expected next year, contingent on funding falling into place shortly after the new year.

The aquatics center is a long-awaited solution to the decades-old need for such a facility in Mobile, providing a promising future for local swimming and diving events.
