Mobile Christian Makes History: First AHSAA Football State Title in Super 7 Showdown

Mobile Christian Makes History: In a thrilling Class 3A Super 7 State Championship game at the University of Alabama’s Bryant-Denny Stadium, Mobile Christian secured a decisive victory, scoring three touchdowns in the final 10:10 to beat Madison Academy 55-28.

Junior quarterback Damien Gatson, named the 3A game MVP, played a crucial role in the victory. His 55-yard touchdown pass to Kentonio Kelly early in the fourth quarter proved to be the decisive play. Gatson, reflecting on the play, mentioned, “It hit him in the hands, and he broke a couple of tackles.” Kelly added, “When I caught that ball, I saw I had to do it for my teammates.”

Mobile Christian’s victory marked its first AHSAA football state title, and it was especially gratifying for head coach Ronnie Cottrell, who underwent eye surgery a week before the game. The team finished the season with a perfect 15-0 record.

Madison Academy, aiming for its first state title since 2014, put up a strong fight, with both teams showcasing impressive offensive performances. Gatson completed 15-of-20 passes for 298 yards and five touchdowns, while Brown led the rushing attack with 105 yards and a touchdown.

Despite Madison Academy’s efforts, Mobile Christian’s ability to make crucial plays, especially in the final moments, secured their convincing victory. Coach Cottrell expressed confidence in his team after their semifinal win, stating, “After we beat Saint James, I knew they were going to win it.” Gatson summed up the significance of the win, stating, “This is one to remember.”

The Super 7 Championship games are televised live over the Alabama Public Television Network, with all games produced by the NFHS Network. The victory adds another chapter to Mobile Christian’s football legacy, with Coach Cottrell and his team achieving an unforgettable milestone.
