Cotton Mill Village Revitalized: From Abandoned to a Home for Veterans

Cotton Mill Village Revitalized: Cotton Mill Village, an abandoned neighborhood in Prichard, is getting a new lease on life as a community for homeless veterans. Rodney Clements, founder of the Prosperity Community Development Council and vice president of Veterans Corps, is leading the project to transform the forgotten area into a haven for veterans in need.

The historical groundbreaking took place on Saturday, with community members exploring the vacant property that had been neglected for years. Clements sees the 22-acre property, with its 57 dwellings and 86 lots, as a “diamond in the rough.” The plan is not just to build homes but also to create parks and recreational spaces, fostering a fulfilling community atmosphere.

With approximately 2,500 veterans in need of shelter, the project aims to provide single-family dwellings, offering a more comfortable living environment. The first home has already been renovated and completed in just 30 days, showcasing the unity and community effort behind the initiative.

General contractor Tyrone Pettway, CEO of Kingdome Renovations in Mobile, expressed the importance of the project being close to his heart as a Prichard resident. The vision includes restoring homes to their original appearance, although recognizing that not all can be fully restored.

The community is urged to refrain from dumping in the newly-cleared area as the project moves forward, marking the beginning of a transformative journey for Cotton Mill Village.
