Perkins Family Faces Thanksgiving Heartache: Empty Chair, Painful Reminders

Perkins Family Faces Thanksgiving Heartache: The Perkins family is facing a difficult Thanksgiving without Steve, who was killed by Decatur police 54 days ago. The absence of Steve during the holiday season serves as a painful reminder for the family, and they emphasize the importance of cherishing every moment with loved ones.

Thanksgiving, typically a time for family gatherings, will be particularly challenging for the Perkins family. Steve’s brother, Nick, expressed the hurtful reality of an empty seat at the table and the pain of knowing why Steve is absent.

As the holiday season kicks off, the family anticipates the challenges ahead, especially for Steve’s wife and children. Nick mentioned that Steve’s family won’t be able to partake in such events and gatherings, emphasizing the violent manner in which Steve was taken from them by those meant to protect.

The upcoming holidays—Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Steve’s birthday in January—will be difficult for the family. They find it troubling that the four officers involved in Steve’s death and city leaders can enjoy these holidays while they cannot.

Despite the challenges, the family remains hopeful for justice. Nick expressed their belief in God and faith, trusting that things will work out for those who believe. The family looks forward to justice being served, even though it may take time.

A community vigil and communion are planned outside the Morgan County Courthouse on Thursday at 8 a.m. Meanwhile, Decatur Mayor Tab Bowling will hold a hearing on December 4 to decide the disciplinary actions, including possible termination, for the officers involved in Steve’s death.
