Decatur Salvation Army Seeks Community Support: for Reopening

Decatur Salvation Army Seeks Community Support: Two years ago, the Salvation Army of Decatur closed its doors, leaving a significant gap in efforts to support the homeless population in Morgan County. Since then, the homeless community in the city has nearly tripled, posing a challenge to fully reopen the shelter.

Morgan County homeless advocates estimate that approximately 175 people are unsheltered each night, excluding nearby Limestone County. Salvation Army Sergeants Jim and Rebecca Lahman have taken on the mission to address this dire situation.

Unaware of the extent of homelessness in the area, the Lahmans were shocked to learn about the challenges faced by the homeless population. Individuals are now scattered throughout the city, lacking overnight shelter during inclement weather. Many are living in tents or on doorsteps, making it challenging to assess the total number.

The Lahmans acknowledge the significant challenge they face in securing funds for repairs, hiring staff, and sustaining operations. Competition with higher-paying jobs, such as those offered by Chick-fil-A, adds to the difficulty. Despite these challenges, they remain optimistic that with donations, they can get the building operational and address personnel needs.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the Lahmans understand that without the Salvation Army’s prompt reopening, the homeless population will continue to overflow. Currently, there are no available shelters between Decatur and Huntsville and Florence, including Morgan, Lawrence, and Limestone counties.

Upon completion, the new unit aims to accommodate approximately 150 men for an overnight stay, potentially saving 150 lives from the harsh conditions. While the Salvation Army of Decatur continues to operate transitional housing for women and children, a food pantry, and church services, the Lahmans’ goal is to reopen the homeless shelter by June 2024.
