Victoria Withdraws as Host: After cost projections exceeded expectations, Victoria, Australia, withdrew its bid to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games. State authorities reported that the initial estimate of 2.6 billion Australian dollars ($1.7 billion) had ballooned to 7 billion Australian dollars ($4.77 billion).
Premier Daniel Andrews told a Melbourne press conference that while he has made many difficult decisions, this one was easy. “Frankly, six to $7 billion for a 12-day sporting event,” he lamented. Not us. That’s not worth it. Cost without benefit.”
Every four years, thousands of Commonwealth athletes compete in the Commonwealth Games. In 2022, Birmingham, England hosted the largest Games ever.
Last March, Victoria won the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Due to low interest and the COVID-19 pandemic, organizers had trouble finding a suitable location. Victoria’s withdrawal casts doubt on the Games’ future.
Victoria’s decision disappointed the Commonwealth Games Federation and hurt the Commonwealth Sport Movement. The Federation claimed Victorian authorities had not previously raised concerns about rising costs. They criticized the lack of pre-discussion of solutions.

Victorian authorities’ $6 billion estimate on Tuesday was 50% higher than the Organizing Committee board’s June estimate. The Federation noted that the state’s sports and venue decisions often went against CGF and CGA advice, resulting in high costs.
Despite this setback, the Commonwealth Games Federation is determined to find a way to proceed with the Games. They want options advice. Regional Victoria hosted the Games March 1729, 2026. Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat, Gippsland, and Shepparton, outside Melbourne, were expected to receive much-needed investment and international exposure from the event.
Victoria will build 1,300 affordable homes and permanent sports facilities instead of hosting the Games. Premier Andrews says these initiatives will boost regional tourism and events.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games’ future is uncertain after Victoria withdrew as host. However, efforts are underway to find a solution that will allow the Games to proceed, allowing Commonwealth athletes to compete globally.
