Vestavia Hills Resident Faces Charges in $2.3 Million Money Laundering Scheme

Vestavia Hills Resident Faces: A Vestavia Hills resident, Robert Carleton Howard, 39, is now at the center of a legal storm, charged with laundering approximately $2.3 million in illicit funds. This development comes as a federal grand jury issues a comprehensive seven-count indictment against Howard, accusing him of both conspiracy to commit money laundering and direct involvement in money laundering.

The indictment, unveiled by Northern District of Alabama U.S. Attorney Prim Escalona and FBI Special Agent in Charge Carlton L. Peeples, points to the origin of these illicit funds—business email compromise schemes aimed at American businesses.

Delving into the details, the indictment outlines Howard’s alleged involvement in a scheme spanning from July 2021 to August 2021. At the core of this operation were fake email accounts meticulously crafted to “spoof” or impersonate third-party vendors associated with various companies. The objective was to deceive these companies into transferring substantial sums of money into bank accounts under the control of the conspiracy.

During this period, Howard, according to the indictment, played a pivotal role. He orchestrated the creation and operation of at least one bank account, funneling around $2.3 million in proceeds from business email compromise activities within a mere two days.

Swiftly and strategically, Howard converted these ill-gotten gains into cryptocurrency, subsequently transferring them to fellow conspirators and channeling a portion into his personal bank account. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) spearheaded the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan “Jack” Harrington taking the reins in prosecuting the case.

In the event of conviction, Howard could face a maximum sentence of up to 20 years behind bars, marking a critical juncture in the legal battle ahead.
