VCSU Winter Commencement Celebrates: Valley City State University proudly marked a momentous occasion during the Winter Commencement ceremony on Thursday, Dec. 14, in the esteemed Vangstad Auditorium.
A total of 133 students, having earned their degrees in either the summer or fall, were part of this joyous celebration. The distinguished group comprised 101 undergraduate recipients and 32 graduate students. You can find the comprehensive list of graduates right here.
President Alan LaFave, in his address during the ceremony, emphasized the significance of the accomplishments being celebrated and looked ahead to the future. He stated, Whether your next plans are to be a teacher, software engineer, entrepreneur, business owner, nurse, wildlife biologist, writer, musician, artist, or pursue a degree in law or medicine or some other advanced education, the opportunities that lie before you are plentiful. No matter the next step on your path, you can all be proud to proclaim that you are a graduate of the VCSU class of 2023.
Curt Biller, a member of the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education (SBHE), expressed confidence in the university’s role in preparing graduates for growth and achievement. He hoped that the graduating individuals would find success, ideally contributing their talents and abilities to North Dakota, where opportunities abound.

Student speaker and graduate Cora Potts shared a personal journey, saying, This summer, I decided to do this for myself. I returned to VCSU as a student once again to finish what I had started with continued support from so many people in the VCSU community. She encouraged her fellow graduates to take pride in their achievements, face challenges head-on, and be proud of their future dreams.
Dr. Teather Sundstrom, the faculty speaker, encouraged graduates to put in the work to genuinely fall in love with their careers. She emphasized the importance of recognizing when a job turns into a fulfilling career, urging graduates to be the best they can be, commit to making a difference, and actively contribute to driving their own success. Sundstrom highlighted the significance of teamwork, leadership, communication, and even being a cheerleader in this journey.
The ceremony also recognized 19 students who completed their first bachelors degree in an impressive three years, adding an extra layer of achievement to the celebration.
