Tuscaloosa Library Libby Service to Continue Amidst Budget Adjustments

Tuscaloosa Library Libby Service to Continue: Tuscaloosa County Public Library folks can keep enjoying Libby, the e-book and audiobook service loaded with a bunch of books and magazines. The library shared on Facebook that Libby will stick around “until further notice.”

The library’s financial committee is on the case, brainstorming ways to keep Libby rolling for patrons. While there’s no official update yet, the good news is that Libby stays active for now, as per the library official.

A budget pinch led to changes, with reduced programming announced in October. The Brown Branch on Bobby Miller Parkway is set to close its doors in February 2024, and both the branch and the main library adjusted their operating hours this month.

Now, the e-book and audiobook collection, Overdrive/Libby, boasting 40,000 digital titles, including 13,000 for Tuscaloosa City and County students, was initially on the chopping block but gets a lifeline.

Budget tweaks also mean a 15% cut in book purchases and a trim in the summer reading program from eight weeks to four. TPL is eyeing three book vending machines, courtesy of American Rescue Plan Act funds.

For those planning a visit, the main library shifted its hours starting December 1, opening from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, noon to 5 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, with Sunday being a day of rest. Brown Branch hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, closed Tuesday through Thursday, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. Weaver Bolden library hours stay the same.
