Tuberville Ends Hold on Military Promotions: Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville informed Senate Republicans on Tuesday that he would end his hold on military promotions.
Senate Democrats are working on a resolution to change confirmation rules, enabling the confirmation of military officers in a single package with a simple majority vote, bypassing Tuberville’s blockade since March. The Alabama senator promised to resolve the hold before the resolution’s vote, potentially putting Republicans in a sensitive position, as per Punchbowl.
In a closed-door lunch with Senate GOP members, Tuberville stated, “Listen, everyone. I got yall into this mess. Im gonna get you out,” according to Punchbowl.
Tuberville has indicated that the upcoming vote on rule changes would not affect his efforts to resolve the confirmation holds. Some Senate Republicans expressed exhaustion over the situation.
A temporary rule change proposed by Democratic Sen. Jack Reed and independent Sen. Krysten Sinema would allow approximately 450 admirals and generals awaiting confirmation to pass in a single package with a majority vote. The measure, passing out of committee on a 9-7 party line vote, could garner Republican support in the full Senate, undermining Tuberville’s opposition to the Pentagons abortion travel policy.

The resolution needs 60 votes to pass the full Senate, requiring at least nine GOP members’ support. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has vowed to bring the resolution to the floor unless Republicans propose their own solution.
Emerging from a November 7 meeting with other Senate Republicans, Tuberville mentioned considering five or six options to resolve the hold. He has consistently argued for individual votes on each nomination without the requirement for unanimous consent.
Tuberville’s office declined to comment to the Daily Caller News Foundation.
