Sullivan County Gears Up for 3rd Annual MLK Day: Sullivan County’s 3rd Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Youth Summit is set to take place on January 12, 2024, at the Hurleyville Performing Arts Centre. The free event is open to Sullivan County youth in grades 11 and 12 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The summit aims to inspire teens, emphasizing the importance of their voice, their capacity for change, and guiding them in creating a personal life blueprint.

The event will feature dynamic keynote speaker Duncan Kirkwood, Director of the Center for Resiliency at Villa Maria College, Army National Guard Master Resilience Trainer, and author of “Rerouting: Resilience Tools and Tactics.” Kirkwood, born and raised in Buffalo, New York, will share his insights on resilience and overcoming adversity.

Interactive workshops and collaborative activities are designed to broaden participants’ perspectives and encourage a commitment to service. The summit will also include a presentation of Dr. King’s famous speech, “Blueprint for Life,” focusing on principles such as belief in oneself, determination, and commitment. Attendees will receive four hours of community service time for graduation requirements.

The MLK Day of Service Youth Summit is presented by various organizations, including Sullivan 180, Action Toward Independence Inc., Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County, and others dedicated to youth development and community engagement.
