September 7th World History:  1533: Queen Elizabeth I was born. She became one of the most powerful queens in British history.

1776: During the American Revolutionary War, the submarine “Turtle” attempted to attach a time bomb to the HMS Eagle in New York Harbor. It was the first time a submarine was used in war, but it didn’t go well.

1822: Brazil gained independence from Portugal with the aid of Pedro I, the Portuguese King’s son.

 The Pro Football Hall of Fame opened in Canton, Ohio, with 17 charter members.

1977: The Torrijos-Carter Treaties were made by Panama and the US. These treaties outline the future of the Panama Canal. In the late 20th century, the U.S. handed over control of the canal to Panama.

1978: Georgi Markov was assassinated by a Bulgarian agent who used a ricin pellet from an umbrella in Rome.

1979: ESPN, short for “Entertainment and Sports Programming Network,” had its debut broadcast.

1996: A shooting in Las Vegas injured rapper Tupac Shakur. He died in six days.

2008:
 The U.S. Government took control of the two largest mortgage financing companies in the U.S., Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

2012: Canada cut diplomatic ties with Iran by closing its embassy in Tehran and ordering Iranian officials to leave Ottawa. This was done due to Iran’s support for Syria, nuclear weapon plans, and alleged human rights abuses according to Canada.
