September 6th World History: 1522 – Magellan’s Expedition

The first trip around the world ended with Magellan’s ship, the Victoria, returning to Spain. Magellan died in the Philippines, with only 18 of the original crew surviving out of 270.

1620 – Mayflower Departs

Pilgrims sailed on the Mayflower from Plymouth, England to the New World. They settled in present-day Massachusetts, one of the earliest permanent European settlements in North America.

1869 – First Labor Day

Labor Day was first held in New York City in the United States. It was organized by the Central Labor Union to showcase workers’ achievements.

1901 – Assassination of President William McKinley

U.S. President William McKinley was shot by anarchist Leon Czolgosz while attending the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. McKinley died eight days later, and Vice President Theodore Roosevelt succeeded him.

1939 – South Africa Declares War on Germany

South Africa declared war on Germany, joining the Allies in World War II. The decision was controversial and led to a split in the ruling party.

1948 – Juliana Becomes Queen of the Netherlands

Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands abdicated in favor of her daughter, Juliana, who became the new queen.

1965 – Indo-Pakistani War

The Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 began after Pakistan’s Operation Gibraltar, aiming to send troops into Jammu and Kashmir to incite rebellion against Indian rule.

1970 – Dawson’s Field Hijackings

The PFLP hijacked four planes, flying three to Jordan’s Dawson’s Field. People worldwide noticed the Palestinian issue due to recent events.

1972 – Munich Massacre

The Munich Massacre occurred during the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany, when a Palestinian terrorist group took 11 Israeli athletes hostage and eventually killed them.

1991 – Leningrad Renamed

The Russian city of Leningrad was renamed back to its original name, St. Petersburg, following the collapse of the Soviet Union.

1997 – Funeral of Princess Diana

Princess Diana was buried in London. She died in a car accident recently, and millions watched her funeral globally.
