Senator Rick Scott Demands Answers on Alabama: Selection Over Undefeated Florida State

Senator Rick Scott Demands Answers on Alabama: The College Football Playoff’s decision to include Alabama over undefeated Florida State stirred controversy and drew the attention of politicians. U.S. Senator Rick Scott, representing Florida, demanded answers from the selection committee, questioning FSU’s exclusion. In response, CFP executive director Bill Hancock cited the selection protocol, emphasizing the consideration of key player availability.

Hancock highlighted the impact of FSU’s star quarterback, Jordan Travis, suffering a season-ending injury, leading the committee to believe that four other teams deserved higher rankings. Despite FSU’s success without Travis, including an ACC championship victory, Alabama, propelled by defeating No. 1 Georgia, surpassed them.

The letter also addressed FSU’s strength of schedule, noting it was not as robust as the top four teams. Hancock defended the decision, stating that strength of schedule is a crucial metric, and the right four teams were chosen, acknowledging the disappointment felt by FSU fans.

Senator Scott remained dissatisfied, emphasizing “NO TRANSPARENCY” in response to Hancock’s letter. He questioned the logic of FSU dropping in rankings after a win over No. 14 Louisville without Travis and called for answers to their queries. Alabama is set to face No. 1 Michigan in the CFP Rose Bowl semifinal on January 1, 2024.
