Scott Chadwick, the coach at Clayton High School, playfully teases his player, Ryan, about his extensive collection of college team shirts. He jokes, “Do those schools pay you to wear their stuff every day?”
A skilled coach understands the language of quarterbacks.

Chadwick’s expertise extends to coaching Division I quarterback prospects, having previously coached UNC’s Drake Maye at Myers Park in Charlotte before joining Clayton in 2022.
“I feel I played a role in his current success,” Chadwick states. “But, I’m not surprised.”
Chadwick observed NFL-worthy traits in Maye from his early days at Myers Park.
“His physical skills stood outhis throwing ability, size, and evident frame. More importantly, his demeanor and character were apparent even then,” notes Chadwick.
Maye faced challenges, with one high school season canceled due to the pandemic. Despite this, he excelled, throwing for 6,713 yards and 86 TDs in his two years as Myers Park’s starter. Chadwick also recalls Maye’s prowess in basketball, showcasing versatility on the court.
Chadwick recognizes the same competitive fire and humble demeanor in Maye’s current play at UNC.

“People often ask about his polite nature in interviewsit’s not an act. He’s been raised right,” Chadwick affirms.
Maye’s manners make him an appealing face for any NFL franchise. As Maye contemplates entering the draft or returning to school, Chadwick recalls his college decision.
Maye initially committed to Alabama despite strong ties to UNC. However, Bryce Young’s commitment to the Crimson Tide led Maye to reconsider. North Carolina continued recruiting him, taking advantage of his frequent presence on campus.
Maye eventually decommitted from Alabama and chose North Carolina. Chadwick humorously recounts the situation, “I’m not telling Coach Saban.”
As Maye approaches draft day, his only decision will be which friends and family to invite. Chadwick, recalling a pre-North Carolina breakfast during the pandemic, expressed his belief that Maye could be a first-round draft pick.
