Rudy Giuliani skips hearing in defamation case: Georgia Election Worker Defamation trial

Rudy Giuliani skips hearing in defamation case: Rudy Giuliani stirred up a fuss by skipping a court hearing on Tuesday before his defamation trial, leaving a federal judge displeased.

The pretrial session in Washington aimed to set the stage for next week’s jury trial, focusing on determining the damages Giuliani would have to pay to Ruby Freeman and her daughter, Wandrea “Shaye” Moss. The two Georgia election workers sued Giuliani for defamation.

U.S. District Judge Beryl A. Howell kicked off the hearing by asking the attorneys to state their names and identify who was present. Giuliani’s attorney, Joseph Sibley, stood alone at the defendant’s table and admitted Giuliani was in New York.

Judge Howell pointed out her standing order, mandating all counsel and parties to be present, and questioned Sibley about missing it. She remarked, “How could you have missed that? Or did you miss it? It sets the tone, doesn’t it, for the whole case.”

Sibley admitted fault, stating he misread the order and took responsibility for Giuliani’s absence. When asked if he was taking the fall for Giuliani, Sibley denied it, saying, “I should have been aware. It’s my fault.”

Later, Howell instructed Sibley to submit in writing by noon Wednesday that Giuliani does not plan to object to any decisions made during the pretrial conference.

Giuliani’s defamation trial is slated to kick off with jury selection on Monday. Howell has already found him “civilly liable on plaintiffs’ defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, civil conspiracy, and punitive damage claims” due to his “willful discovery misconduct” and avoidance of discovery obligations.

Jurors will determine the financial penalty. Giuliani previously confessed to making “false” statements about Freeman and Moss, the Georgia election workers seeking $15.5 million to $43 million in damages, claiming their lives were severely affected by the campaign against them.
