Rideshare Drivers Pay and Conditions: The Minneapolis City Council passed a regulation Thursday requiring rideshare drivers to be paid more and have better working conditions. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey is close to overturning this verdict. He asked the council to postpone voting.
Uber and Lyft have stated that they will stop operating in the city if this restriction is enacted, but the measure was passed 7-5.
Robin Wonsley, Jason Chavez, Jamal Osman, Jeremiah Ellison, Andrea Jenkins, Elliott Payne, and Aisha Chughtai supported the ruling. At the same time, Linea Palmisano, LaTrisha Vetrew, Michael Rainville, Emily Koski, and Andrew Johnson opposed it. Council member Lisa Goodman disappeared.
The recently authorized proposal sets the lowest driver pay and allows them to appeal deactivation. It also states that gift cards cannot be used to pay for transportation, which drivers say have been used to perpetrate crimes.
Lyft wants Mayor Frey to oppose the law because it will raise ride prices. Instead, they want a state-wide solution that gives drivers a choice. Uber has convinced users to oppose the policy. The corporation has reiterated that it will leave the city in January after the regulation takes effect.
Mayor Frey wrote to council members concerning motorist behavior. He stressed the necessity of research, planning, and communication to protect drivers and passengers. He also requested delaying the ordinance’s start until after the next legislative session. This matches a state working group’s timeline for advising the legislature.
Council member Robin Wonsley said the city would enforce the ordinance in January. They advocated swift action, citing evidence and expert-created policies. Minneapolis has a great chance to lead the state and assist employees, according to Wonsley.

The scheme pays drivers $1.40 per mile and 51 cents each minute for rides. Annual payment rates will be modified automatically. It also requires drivers to get 80% of canceled rides, extra charges, and a clear record of their overall pay.
Mayor Frey is concerned about the driver-firing process, the city’s driver center concept, and the gift card ban, which he says could damage those in need.
Drivers convicted of homicide, stalking, or unlawful sexual behavior lose their licenses, per policy. This will be announced at least five days in advance.
Mayor Frey’s spokesperson stated he was concerned about the law’s wording and its effects after the vote. The speaker also said he needs time to evaluate the bill and its changes before making a decision.
The council needs nine votes to overturn the mayor’s likely veto, which may be tough given the law’s close vote.
