Remembering Dr. Mary Jane Caylor: Dr. Mary Jane Caylor, a remarkable Alabama educator and Huntsville trailblazer, has passed away, leaving a void that’s hard to fathom. A Huntsvillian through and through, she dedicated her life to education, becoming the first female superintendent of city schools and serving three terms on the state board of education.

Caylor’s indomitable personality and unwavering confidence captivated listeners until the end. At 81, she departed, a year after daringly parachuting from an airplane to celebrate her 80th birthday. Her courage allowed her to live life on her terms, fearlessly expressing herself and forging ahead.

Dr. Clarence Sutton, Huntsville City Schools superintendent, lauded Caylor as a true innovator and advocate for public education. Her fervor for educating students, supporting teachers, and engaging the community defined her leadership. She not only paved the way but set lofty standards for the school system’s future direction.

Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle remembered Dr. Mary Jane Caylor as a force to be reckoned with—forward-thinking, strong-willed, and effective. She fearlessly stood for what she believed was right, leaving a lasting impact with her compassion and dedication to the community. As we mourn the loss of this remarkable woman and tireless advocate, our hearts go out to her family.

In the words of longtime friend Linda Spalla, former head of WHNT television station, “We will all miss her fiery spirit!”
