Planters Hardware with 107 Years of Legacy: Honored with Alabama Centennial Retailer Award

Planters Hardware with 107 Years of Legacy: Planters Hardware, a cherished fixture in Ashland, Alabama, has been a community cornerstone since 1916. Celebrating 107 years, the Alabama Retail Association acknowledges their enduring contributions to the town. Let’s dive into their remarkable story.

The story of Planters Hardware & Building Inc.

Back in 1916, Planters Hardware’s roots took hold when the Runyan family took charge of the inaugural downtown location. Yet, the tale extends further, tracing back to the Garrett Family in the late 1800s. The Garretts laid the foundation, naming the business after planters who settled debts post-harvest.

Since the early 20th century, the Runyan family has steered the ship, marking over a century of ownership. Now in its third generation, the business originated with Boyd and Bruner Runyan, later handed down to Joe Runyan.

Joe, a community icon who recently retired after decades at Planters, left an indelible mark. His grandson, Cole Runyan, fondly recalls the legacy in vivid detail.

“Probably eight out of the 10 people who would come through the doors, varying people who weren’t even from Clay County, would sit down beside him and chat and have whole conversations about their family life.

He would know their family, who their father was, where they lived. It was just crazy.”

In the late 1990s, the reins of Planters Hardware passed to Joe’s son, Walt. Since then, Walt’s family has upheld the tradition of making Planters a community haven for all things fixable. Staying true to the old-fashioned approach, they build genuine relationships with customers and jot down tickets by hand.
