Paul Simon Musical Odyssey Unveiled: In Restless Dreams at TIFF

Paul Simon Musical Odyssey Unveiled: After a marathon showing of a 3.5-hour documentary about his life, Paul Simon turned to the tired crowd.

Simon addressed the crowd after the premiere of Alex Gibney’s “In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon,” a cinematic masterpiece showcased at the Toronto International Film Festival. Simon sincerely addressed the crowd.

At 81, Simon hadn’t started watching the movie yet. He made this choice before the premiere and stuck to it. He said, “I’ll find the courage to watch it,” he didn’t back down.

This film, aiming for TIFF, is a journey through Simon’s career. The film traces Simon’s artistic journey from his time in Queens, New York, where he met musician Art Garfunkel, to the release of his influential 1986 album “Graceland,” made with South African musicians.

“In Restless Dreams,” named after a line in “The Sound of Silence,” is a beautiful song showcasing Paul Simon’s meticulously crafted latest masterpiece, “Seven Psalms,” performed globally in May.

Simon’s latest record came from a dream he had in 2019. In the dream, he saw a group of 7 songs. The creative process was challenging, especially with Simon’s hearing loss in his left ear. It disrupted his musical balance.

During the Q&A, Simon openly discussed his hearing problem and shared his journey of acceptance.

Simon crossed paths with Gibney, a renowned documentary filmmaker known for films like “Going Clear” and “Taxi to the Dark Side.” The idea to collaborate came from Simon’s love for Gibney’s 2015 documentary “Sinatra: All or Nothing at All.” Simon asked Gibney to write a true story about him as an observer.

Simon finds it attractive when someone draws the truth about him. I shouldn’t say what the truth is. My view is biased. I fluctuate between high and low self-perception. It’s more interesting if someone else gets it.

He also mentioned missing past recording sessions, such as those for “Bridge Over Troubled Water” (1970) and “Graceland.” “In Restless Dreams” satisfies longing by showing rare footage, like 16mm dailies from the making of “Songs of America” and early “Graceland” practices.

Simon said he keeps making music and recently completed a new piece. Inspiration still comes at night. He joked about dreaming and wanting to write a song called “It’s What’s His Name.” The crowd applauded, showing the legend’s enduring strength.
