North Alabama Power Grid Faces Winter Challenges: In Huntsville, Alabama, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation has released its Winter Reliability Assessment, offering insights into the vulnerabilities of the power grid during extreme conditions.
The report identifies North Alabama as being at an elevated risk during severe weather events, primarily due to challenges in power capacity. Specifically, it highlights the potential for energy emergencies in the face of a severe cold weather event that extends to the South, leading to increased generator forced outages and electricity demand.
The region experienced such challenges firsthand last December when the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) had to implement rolling blackouts to address heightened power demands. TVA spokesperson Scott Fiedler acknowledged an unprecedented capacity issue, resulting in curtailment for the first time in the organization’s 90-year history.
Despite these past setbacks, Fiedler assured that TVA is actively addressing the issue to prevent its recurrence. With a substantial investment of over $15 billion in the next three years, the company is focused on expanding power generation, increasing capacity, and implementing measures to safeguard against cold weather.
“We’re building 3,800 megawatts of electricity,” Fiedler stated, emphasizing the commitment to readiness for various scenarios that Mother Nature might present during the winter. The aim is to ensure resilience against challenges and maintain a reliable power supply for the community.

How does the cold affect the power grid?
Winter’s harsh temperatures and conditions strain grid infrastructure. Cold weather makes lines rigid, and ice can accumulate around underground lines by following tree roots. The weight of just ½ of ice can add an extra 500 pounds of pressure on the lines.
What is the reliability of energy?
Durable energy stems from resilient energy systems that can endure and swiftly bounce back from common disturbances.
