North Alabama Boulder Field Transformed into Climber Paradise

North Alabama Boulder Field Transformed: “The Citadel” in Fort Payne, Alabama, now a climber’s haven, as Southeastern Climbers Coalition (SCC) and Access Fund secure 58 acres of this impressive boulder field.

An “iconic climbing area”

After more than two decades of persistent efforts, SCC and Access Fund have achieved their goal of acquiring and protecting Citadel Boulders. The land purchase opens up The Citadel’s 150+ unique climbing challenges to enthusiasts from across the Southeast.

“The acquisition of the Citadel Boulders is a testament to the patience and discipline needed to protect iconic climbing areas.

SCC has been working for decades to secure permanent access to Citadel Boulders.”

Meagan Evans, Executive Director, Southeastern Climbers Coalition

With the recent acquisition, climbers can look forward to exploring the diverse array of climbing challenges. However, there’s a temporary hold on visits as SCC plans to install infrastructure for improved accessibility. Once completed, climbers and hikers will have free access to enjoy the boulder field.

For those eager to catch a glimpse of the land, participation in “Trail Days” is encouraged. During these events, efforts will focus on cleaning up graffiti, managing trash, and establishing trail and signage infrastructure on the property.

About the property + purchase of Citadel Boulders

Featuring numerous sandstone boulders, the property is a breathtaking sight, complemented by the encompassing 58 acres. Beyond the boulders, this land offers natural splendor and hiking opportunities for both locals and visitors. Moreover, it serves as a habitat for various rare and exquisite plant and animal species.

Local organizations played a crucial role in supporting SCC’s acquisition of The Citadel, offering grants to SCC and Access Fund. Chattanooga-based Riverview Foundation and Lyndhurst Foundation were pivotal contributors, with a significant grant. Bruz Clark, their Director, aptly described Citadel Boulders as a “magical constellation of rock formations” (SCC).
