The first presidential primary must be held in New Hampshire before any other election. South Carolina’s primary would be on February 3, 2024, per the new DNC schedule. NH and NV would have theirs three days later. If New Hampshire doesn’t comply, it may lose 50% of its Democratic delegates for the presidential election. The DNC’s Rules and Bylaws Committee will discuss New Hampshire’s primary state status at its September 14 meeting.
Ray Buckley, long-time chair of the New Hampshire Democratic Party, called the DNC’s decision “mind-boggling” and a “self-inflicted wound.” He claims the change would harm Dems in the swing state in the northeast in the 2024 election. Buckley predicted Biden wouldn’t run in the New Hampshire primary, potentially embarrassing him. The DNC approved Biden’s plan to empower minority voters. This calendar does what’s needed. It allows more people to speak up early. Jaime Harrison, DNC chair, said it unites key Democratic Party groups.

SC Democrats support the new schedule, while SC Republicans will have a later primary in February. Nevada Dems are ready, but the state’s GOP wants a GOP caucus two days later. The Georgia secretary of state, a Republican, scheduled the state’s primary for May 12 next year, against the DNC’s wishes. Despite concerns about his age and approval ratings, many Democrats believe that Biden will still be overwhelmingly renominated, even if he faces setbacks in New Hampshire or Iowa. Democratic strategist Maria Cardona predicts a landslide victory for President Biden in the primary, making him the party’s nominee.
On September 14, the DNC’s Rules and Bylaws Committee will discuss New Hampshire’s primary state status. Republicans control New Hampshire’s governor’s office and state legislature, so state Democrats oppose removing its role as the first primary. The DNC and New Hampshire’s disagreement raises doubts about the Democratic Party’s new candidate selection schedule. It could be tough for VP Biden if he chooses to avoid running in the Granite State. The problem remains unsolved and will be a key topic at the next DNC meeting.
