According to a report by Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger earlier this week, the scheduling alliance follows a 7+1 format, making Oregon State and Washington State ineligible for the MWC Championship Game.
“The agreement, initially for just one season, is anticipated to involve a fee of approximately $14 million paid to the Mountain West. … The alliance is structured around what is termed a ‘7+1’ format, where Mountain West teams participate in seven conference games not eight and one game against either Washington State or Oregon State.
There’s an option to extend the deal to the 2025 season as well,” wrote Dellenger. “The two Pac-12 members won’t be eligible for the MWC championship and will compete as quasi-independents under the Pac-12 banner. Those Mountain West schools with previously scheduled non-conference games against one of the two schools will also play the other during the same season.

“While there isn’t expected to be a contractual requirement for a long-term merger between the two entities, there is an intent and understanding of full-time membership for OSU and WSU in the Mountain West or a merger.”
Additionally, Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez expressed extreme excitement in announcing the alliance.
“This is a unique and unprecedented opportunity for Oregon State and Washington State to compete against highly competitive Mountain West football programs in 2024,” said Nevarez, as per the press release. “The scheduling agreement will expand the Mountain West footprint and enhance our national brand, providing our student-athletes with new opportunities, all aligned with our strategic priorities.
“The scheduling agreement strengthens the leagues non-conference schedules, and we look forward to having Oregon State and Washington State be a part of the 2024 slate.”
