Mobile Heroes Plaza Groundbreaking Ceremony: Marks of Downtown Waterfront Enhancement

Mobile Heroes Plaza Groundbreaking Ceremony: The City of Mobile is set to mark the beginning of an exciting project with the groundbreaking ceremony for Heroes Plaza on Wednesday. This new attraction aims to honor Mobile’s sports legends and enhance the downtown waterfront.

Heroes Plaza will showcase 9-foot-tall bronze statues of Hall of Fame Baseball players from Mobile, including Hank Aaron, Satchel Paige, Billy Williams, Ozzie Smith, and Willie Lee McCovey. It will also feature NFL Hall of Fame member Robert Brazile Jr. This public asset, funded through the downtown TIF, represents a $10 million investment.

The project extends beyond the statues, incorporating improvements to the area between the Mobile Convention Center and Cooper Riverside Park. Enhancements include a new intersection, roundabout, revised vehicle drop-off area, additional ADA ramps, a new fountain, pedestals, and signage for the statues. The project encompasses upgrades to the marquee, landscaping, lighting, security, drainage, and sidewalks in the area.

Local media are invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, November 29, in front of the Mobile Convention Center (1 S. Water Street). Mayor Sandy Stimpson and other city officials will be available to discuss the project and planned improvements for Mobile’s downtown waterfront.
