Madison County Heroes Honored at Veterans Dinner

Madison County Heroes Honored: In a heartwarming ceremony, three exceptional individuals were celebrated at the Veterans Dinner. Robert Barnett, an Air Force veteran, received the Veteran of the Year award. The Rocket City Adjutant General’s Corps Regimental Association was recognized as the Veteran Organization of the Year, and retired Navy Capt. William “Bill” Marriott was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The event, held at the Von Braun Center Saturn Ballroom, witnessed the induction of members into the 2023 Madison County Hall of Heroes. These included retired Col. Roy Adams, James Andrews, retired Col. William Johnson, and Ronald Wright, each with a remarkable history of service and sacrifice.

Retired Navy Cmdr. Clay Davis, president of the Madison County Military Heritage Commission, emphasized the importance of recognizing and remembering the heroes for the precious gift of liberty they provide.

Purple Heart Honor Roll recipients were also acknowledged, including James Dortch Jr., the late Randolph “Randy” Eddy Flisak, and Ronald Wright, highlighting their courage and sacrifice.

Veteran of the Year, Robert Barnett, urged everyone to volunteer and embrace the numerous opportunities available. Barnett, with 26 years of service in the Air Force, continues to contribute to the community while working as a facility manager with the FBI. His initiatives, such as the monthly ceremonial walk and involvement with veterans’ organizations, showcase his dedication.

Retired Navy Capt. William “Bill” Marriott, a 26-year naval aviator, received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Marriott’s extensive service, both in active duty and civil service, was acknowledged with gratitude.

The Rocket City Adjutant General’s Corps Regimental Association, led by retired Chief Warrant Officer 4 Eugene Roberts, was lauded for its impactful contributions, from Thanksgiving dinners for first responders to charity events raising nearly $100,000 for veteran assistance.

Other notable mentions during the event included the retired Maj. Jean Downs family, recognized as the AUSA Volunteer Family of the Year, and Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army for North Alabama emeritus Joe Fitzgerald, along with the new CASA Kris McBride.

Emcees for the evening were retired Col. John Kuenzli and WAFF Anchor Liz Hurley, adding a touch of warmth to the memorable occasion.
