Leadership Shifts in Escambia County: During its recent regular meeting, the Escambia County Board of Education in Alabama underwent leadership changes. District 5 Board Member Loumeek White was elected as the new board president in a 4-3 vote, while District 4 Board Member Cindy Jackson was re-elected as the board’s vice president, also in a 4-3 vote.

The election took place during Action Item No. 28, an annual November vote for the president and vice president positions. The board spent 42 minutes in executive session and took no action once the regular meeting resumed.

In addition to the leadership changes, the board approved various items, including an overnight trip for Escambia County’s varsity basketball team to the Hoover Big Orange Tournament in Hoover from Dec. 28-30, 2023. The board also heard a presentation of the FY2022 Audit by the State of Alabama Department of Examiners of Public Accounts.

The audit identified some findings related to financial information publication and reconciliation of financial statements. Other approved actions included a supplement for special education teachers and speech therapists, amendments to the salary schedule, and the purchase of property in East Brewton.

Technology Supervisor Jamie Burkett was recognized during the meeting as he transitions to a new role at Coastal Alabama Community College.
