JBL Authentics Series: JBL launched its Authentics range of three connected speakers to compete with Sonos’ multi-room audio. JBL claims the Authentics series is the first to run Google Assistant and Alexa simultaneously. The speakers have Bluetooth, WiFi, Ethernet, and multi-room audio with automated self-tuning. The $700 top-of-the-line Authentics 500 supports Dolby Atmos audio. The black series will be available on September 17 and will be customizable with the JBL One app.
The most feature-rich variant, the Authentics 500, has three one-inch tweeters, three 2.75-inch mid-range woofers, and a 6.5-inch down-firing subwoofer. This setup gives JBL “crystal clear sound” and “tight, accurate bass.” Its 270 watts of 3.1-channel sound and Dolby Atmos compatibility make the 500 the only unit in the series to simulate 3D sound. The series’ only portable option is the $430 Authentics 300. Its user-replaceable battery gives eight hours of listening time and 360-degree audio. The 300 has a handle for portability. Despite its portability, JBL promises “distinctive highs and deep bass,” even inside.
The $330 Authentics 200 is the smallest. It has two one-inch tweeters, a five-inch woofer, and a six-inch passive radiator. This model can “fill any space big or small with stereo sound,” producing “deep bass” and “perfect balance” across genres, according to JBL. The 200 competes with the Sonos One and Era 100 but costs more.
The JBL One app syncs music services, customizes the EQ, and adjusts other settings on all three Authentics speakers. The speakers will be black starting September 17. JBL’s 1970s L100 speaker inspired the design. Some of JBL’s more expensive models have a grid-patterned Quadrex grille, like the Authentics series. The speakers are black and gold with a leather-wrapped aluminum frame.

JBL works with Google and Amazon to let users simultaneously use Alexa and Google Assistant. Many speakers and headphones enable numerous voice assistants, but consumers must choose one. Authentic customers can set up both voice assistants on the JBL app and use either one for hands-free control of connected devices, music, and more without going into settings.
