Jawan Dallas Family Break Silence Body Cam Footage: Plans Civil Lawsuit Against Mobile Police

Jawan Dallas Family Break Silence Body Cam Footage: The family of Jawan Dallas, who died after being tased twice by Mobile Police officers, has viewed the body camera footage six days after a grand jury cleared the officers of wrongdoing. The family, accompanied by civil rights attorneys and Mobile NAACP President Robert Clopton, expressed shock at what they described as “one of the worst videos of a police killing.” Dallas’s family plans to file a civil lawsuit against the city before the end of the year.

The lack of information surrounding Dallas’s death had led to public unrest, with questions raised about the Mobile Police Department’s actions. The family was initially barred from viewing the footage due to the ongoing investigation and the Grand Jury Secrecy Act.

The footage allegedly revealed at least 13 cycles of the taser, and attorney Harry Daniels claimed that officers did not attempt to help Dallas when he complained about breathing difficulties due to asthma until after he went unconscious. The autopsy ruled Dallas’s death as “Cardiorespiratory Failure” brought on by drug toxicity, with the struggle with officers contributing to the accident.

The family and legal team viewed two videos, estimated to be 45 minutes each. Social activist Bishop William Barber II, involved in the case, released a statement in response to the family viewing the footage.
