Hapuna Beach Facilities: Disarray A Long Wait Ahead

Hapuna Beach Facilities: Hawaii Island’s world-famous Hapuna Beach is struggling. Bathrooms, water taps, and showers may not operate again until next year.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources reports that shoreline leaks since 2018 have exacerbated this issue. The story claims over 40 attempts have been made to remedy the issue since 2018. These sites will close in October 2022 because the situation become unfixable. Until April 2024, they don’t expect a solid, all-encompassing water system.

By July, above-ground water lines were supposed to provide a temporary solution. However, a major design change has delayed the solution. Shipping pipe materials is complicating matters and extending the repair timeframe.

These new issues have enraged locals. They’re furious that the inconvenience is worsening and that it’s dangerous for public health.

One Hawaii Islander said, “There’s really nowhere to wash your hands.” When it’s hot, beachgoers who don’t know about the water issues don’t bring the necessary clothes.

The leaders know how horrible it is. The Parks Division’s Curt Cottrell remarked, “We understand the frustration about the timing and the whole building process.” Vacationers and Big Island residents appreciate Hapuna Beach. We want to eliminate portable toilets and provide a constant, clean water supply for drinking and washing.

Hapuna Beach shines among the chaos.
