The repair project, costing $13.6 million and awarded to MD Thomas Construction, will involve removing collapsed concrete pilings and repairing standing pilings with the help of divers. The entire pier’s lighting equipment will also be replaced.
The closure, expected to last about eight months, will conclude in 2024, with a targeted reopening date in August. The reconstruction aims to enhance the pier’s resilience and ensure it remains a premier fishing and sightseeing destination on the Gulf Coast.
While the pier is under construction, park visitors can still access the beach at various points, including Cotton Bayou, Alabama Point, Shell Beach, and the Beach Pavilion. Additionally, improvements to Romar Beach access are underway and will soon be open for visitors.
