Google AI Election Ads Policy: A Push for Transparency

Google AI Election Ads Policy: Google’s policy on political content will change in mid-November, ahead of the 2024 presidential election. This change aims to curb AI use in political ads by mandating marketers to disclose AI usage in their ads.

Under this new rule, verified election advertisers must disclose if they used AI to manipulate their ad text in a misleading manner. They need to specify if AI was used to create fake content or alter real footage. This rule applies to media and must be displayed where users will likely see it.

The move is in response to the increasing use of AI in political ads, raising concerns about its ability to deceive and manipulate facts. After President Biden announced his re-election bid, the GOP released a 30-second ad titled “AI-generated glimpse of the country’s future if Biden wins in 2024.” In June, Governor Ron DeSantis‘ campaign shared a video with fake images of Trump kissing Fauci. The campaign didn’t mention AI as the creator of these images.

Due to these events, politicians will act. Rep. Yvette D. Clarke, a NY Democrat, proposed a bill to mandate that AI-powered election ads disclose their use. She stressed the significance of this issue as AI-generated content is expected to be heavily used by campaigns, political parties, and Super PACs in the 2024 election. Clarke feared AI-made material may manipulate and deceive people, impacting national security and elections.

This project aims to enhance security, accountability, and openness while remaining adaptable to technological changes.

Google’s policy change on political material highlights the growing significance of AI in political advertising and the need for clear rules in this evolving landscape. The disclosure rules inform the public about AI’s role in political material. This ensures transparency and accountability as the 2024 election approaches.
