Gallettes Honors the Yellowhammer: One of Alabama’s beloved haunts, Gallettes, has immortalized its iconic drink, the Yellowhammer, with a monumental sculpture. The Yellowhammer, a pineapple-infused rum concoction served in a distinctive yellow plastic cup, has become a must-try for visitors to the Druid City, especially on game days near Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Gallettes, renowned for selling thousands of Yellowhammers during Crimson Tide games, decided to pay homage to its best-seller by adorning its walls with a larger-than-life sculpture. Local artist and craftsman Mathew Simmons, a Tuscaloosa native, took the lead in creating this masterpiece.
Simmons, working on commission, met co-owner Jeff Sirkin, who was open to his creative ideas. Simmons envisioned a 5-foot-tall replica of the Yellowhammer cup splashing out of the wall. Using computer-aided design (CAD) software, he meticulously scaled up the cup, even adding details like ice cubes and a splash of the drink using resin.
Crafted from aluminum, the giant cup received an automotive paint finish, and Simmons ensured the realism by adding LED lights to illuminate the interior. The artist’s dedication went further as he 3D-printed and cast oversized replica ice cubes to complement the giant cup.
The result has exceeded expectations, with the sculpture now proudly displayed on Gallettes’ wall. Co-owner Jeff Sirkin praised Simmons for going above and beyond, calling it an incredible statement piece for their signature drink. Simmons, along with local artist Eric Nubbe, has left his artistic mark not only at Gallettes but also at other Tuscaloosa spots, showcasing his talent in creating unique and engaging pieces.
