Fairhope Enhances Mobile Bay Waters: with 60 Mini Reefs Through Eagle Reef Project

Fairhope Enhances Mobile Bay Waters: Fairhope, Alabama, took a step towards cleaner Mobile Bay waters with the placement of 60 Mini Reefs on December 5, 2023.

The city, through the Eagle Reef Project, purchased 14 of these reefs, installing them under several piers along the shoreline. Initiated by John Shell of Boy Scout Troop 147 in Mobile, the Eagle Reef Project aims to provide property owners an easy and affordable way to create marine habitats.

Partnering with Mobile-based Partners for Environmental Progress (PEP) and USA’s Stoke’s School of Marine and Environmental Sciences, Shell’s project gained momentum over the summer. The unique design of the Mini Reefs attracts barnacles, oysters, and mussels, fostering a small ecosystem under piers. PEP has a goal of deploying 1,000 Mini Reefs by the end of 2024, contributing to cleaner bay waters.

Fairhope, recognizing the environmental and educational benefits, supports the program. City leaders see it as an educational tool, intending to bring students to the piers to learn about marine habitats. The initiative aligns with PEP’s mission to promote best environmental practices and educate the community on being good environmental stewards.

The city spent less than $5,000 on the installation of 14 reefs, contributing to the broader effort to enhance and sustain Mobile Bay’s ecosystem.
