Explore the National Peanut Festival in Dothan: If you know Dothan, Alabama, you’ve likely heard of the National Peanut Festival (NPF). As a Dothan native, I’ve been attending for over a decade. Bringing friends in early November to share the joy of this 10-day festival is a tradition I eagerly embrace.

Whether you’re a seasoned NPF veteran or a newcomer, I’m here to spill all the details about the yearly festival and why it’s a must-attend event, without fail, every single year.

Dothan is known as the Peanut Capital of the World

Before diving into the reasons to circle the date for the next Peanut Festival weekend, let’s explore the roots of why this spectacular event graces Dothan every year.

With over half of the peanuts in the United States flourishing within a mere 100-mile radius of Dothan, this Alabama city proudly claims the title of the “Peanut Capital of the World.

The National Peanut Festival is full of carnival rides, animal shows

A highlight of the festival, and undoubtedly one of my favorites, is the array of amusement rides. Dozens line the fairgrounds, offering thrilling spins, daring upside-down adventures, and, of course, plenty of kid-friendly rides.

For those not keen on carnival rides or in need of a stomach-settling break, the 200-acre grounds host a variety of attractions. From petting zoos and captivating animal shows to lively concerts, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

NPF attendees can support local vendors

Within the two exhibition buildings, attendees can wander amidst dozens of local vendors proudly showcasing their craft. It’s a delight to stroll around, taking in the beauty of local work, often entered into various competitions. Some aspects of these exhibitions include:

  • 4H displays
  • Handmade art
  • Photography
  • Recipes

Local businesses, high schools, churches, and more create a bustling atmosphere around the fairgrounds, offering a variety of delectable treats throughout the 10-day festival. It’s a wonderful opportunity to support Dothan neighborhoods while savoring some classic Southern food.

Fair food is top-notch

Now, arguably the most crucial part of the festival—the food. Many locals, myself included, turn a day at the NPF into a full-fledged food tour. Here are a few (of many) must-try goodies:

  • Boiled peanuts
  • Freshly-popped kettle corn
  • Funnel cake
  • Hand-battered corn dogs
  • Roasted corn
  • Turkey leg
