Evangel Lightning Again Triumph in ACSC : In a thrilling showdown at the Evangel Sports Complex, the Evangel Christian Lightning secured their legacy by defeating the Lighthouse Homeschool Warriors 41-14 in the Alabama Christian Schools Conference (ACSC) Championship Game on Nov. 3. The Lightning, five-time defending national champions, showcased resilience after trailing 8-6 at halftime, ultimately extending their remarkable 31-game winning streak.
Coach Tim Smith expressed pride in the special achievement, highlighting the dedication of a unique group of seniors. The game unfolded with a powerful defensive start by the Lightning, followed by a dynamic offensive display. Kemp Swords and Caeleb Austin’s connection led to a 25-yard touchdown, putting Evangel ahead 6-0 in the first quarter.
The Warriors responded swiftly, taking an 8-6 lead, initiating a defensive battle for every inch in the subsequent drives. Evangel seized the lead in the second quarter, and despite attempts to strike before halftime, they went into the break up 12-8.
The second half saw Evangel’s determination to score, with Swords and Will Welch creating momentum. Cade Joiner’s 14-yard rushing touchdown extended the lead to 20-8 in the third quarter. While the Warriors fought back with a touchdown, their two-point conversion failed, and they struggled to score again.
Swords’ 44-yard run set up Austin’s second touchdown, and Evangel continued to dominate. Joiner and Austin added more points, securing a 34-14 lead. The Lightning’s relentless defense, highlighted by sacks on crucial downs, forced a turnover on downs. Evangel capitalized on the opportunity, scoring again and sealing the 41-14 victory.

Coach Smith credited the team’s speed and tenacity on defense, emphasizing their ability to gather around the football. The victory marked another state title for Evangel, and the team now sets its sights on the national playoffs in Panama City Beach, Florida. Despite the challenges ahead, the Lightning, fueled by their never-quit attitude, aim for a sixth consecutive national championship.
The ACSC recognized Hayden Black with the Mr. Football award and honored Caeleb Austin as the Most Outstanding Player of the championship game. Several players, including Zane Barlow, Will Welch, and others, received accolades on the All-Conference Regular Season Team and the Doug Harrison Christian Character Team. The Lightning’s journey continues as they head to Panama City Beach, driven by the goal of securing another championship.
