Durango Freshman Shines in Mesa Basketball Debut: Well, talk about a debut to remember! Mason Rowland, a true freshman from Durango, had a stellar collegiate debut, scoring an impressive 22 points off the bench for the Colorado Mesa women’s basketball team. In a dominating 69-54 victory over Central Washington at the D2CCA Tip-Off Classic in Canada, Rowland showcased her skills on the court.
Her 22 points came on 7-of-13 shooting, including sinking two of four 3-pointers and making 6 of 8 free throws. But it wasn’t just about scoring for Rowland; she contributed across the board, grabbing six rebounds, recording three steals, and blocking a shot. She played a significant role in Mesa’s first-half performance, scoring 16 of the team’s 27 points.
Olivia Reed also had a standout performance, achieving a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. The Mavericks’ depth and efficiency were evident, with four players scoring nine or more points, compared to three for the Wildcats.
In beach volleyball action, Colorado Mesa University’s Taylor Scherff and Gracyn Spresser faced tough competition at the AVCA Fall Collegiate Beach National Championships in Huntsville, Alabama. Seeded 60th out of 64 pairs, they faced challenging matchups but will continue in the consolation bracket.

On the wrestling mat, the No. 4 Mavericks had a strong start to the 2023-24 season, securing victories against Snow College and Chadron State. Notable performances included Jennesis Martinez winning both matches by tech fall and Kiely Tabaldo with two pin victories.
In volleyball, the 11th-ranked Colorado Mesa continued its winning streak with a sweep of New Mexico Highlands, securing a 25-13, 25-21, 25-22 victory. Riley Daugherty led the offensive charge with 10 kills, supported by contributions from Savannah Spitzer and Sydney Leffler. The win marked the 15th consecutive victory over New Mexico Highlands for the Mavericks.
