DOJ Grants Bring Vital Support to YWCA Central: Alabama Domestic Violence Services

DOJ Grants Bring Vital Support to YWCA Central: YWCA Central Alabama’s 24-hour crisis hotline in St. Clair, Jefferson, and Blount counties is set to receive a financial boost, thanks to two grants totaling $742,476 from the U.S. Department of Justice. The funds will support the hotline and a confidential emergency shelter, contributing to a broader $2.5 million grant aimed at assisting agencies serving domestic violence victims in 17 counties in north and central Alabama.

Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) Director Kenneth Boswell highlighted the destructive impact of domestic violence on families and its significance as a public health concern. ADECA is tasked with administering these grants, covering various programs supporting law enforcement, victim assistance, economic development, water resource management, energy conservation, and recreation.

Governor Kay Ivey commended the agencies receiving funding, recognizing their crucial role in providing professional assistance and services that are essential for victims and their families. The agencies offer a safe haven for victims while working to restore hope and break the cycle of violence.

Other agencies benefiting from the grants include the Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama, SafeHouse of Shelby County Inc., 2nd Chance Inc., Family Resource Center of Northwest Alabama Inc., and SAN Inc. (Turning Point). The grants will support a range of services, from culturally specific prevention services for Hispanic victims to safe shelter and supportive services for domestic and sexual violence victims in various counties.

King’s Home will utilize its grant to support programs benefiting victims in Jefferson and Shelby counties, including King’s Home Stables, King’s Home Garden, King’s Home Pottery, and King’s Home thrift stores.
