Decatur Mayor Returns Amidst Silence on Police Shooting: Community Awaits Employment

Decatur Mayor Returns Amidst Silence: Mayor Tab Bowling returned to the council chambers in Decatur after two weeks, explaining his absence by mentioning he was out of town. He addressed his recent silence on the police shooting of Steve Perkins, stating that as a likely judge in the officers’ employment case, he refrains from public comments to adhere to legal processes.

“I can’t go beyond those laws in this process; if I were to go out and start making comments publicly, it would position me to where I would not be able to participate in this process. And so, often, I don’t say anything,” Mayor Bowling explained.

During the work session, Susan Capps, a neighbor of the Perkins family, shared her perspective, emphasizing how Steve Perkins saved her during two medical complications captured in her doorbell footage.

“If you haven’t seen the video or don’t know about it, then you’re not from around here, because all my friends in Ohio are even keeping track of it. I just wanted people to see another side that they haven’t seen of him. Yeah, everybody said he’s a great dad and a great husband. But how did he personally affect my life. Because there’s twice I would have been dead if he hadn’t come and saved me,” expressed Capps.

Councilman Billy Jackson expressed disappointment in Mayor Bowling’s handling of the situation, giving him a low grade for his approach. He stated, “At this particular point, I would not give him a D minus, I would give him an F. And that’s not to jump on the mayor, because I just think he’s handled this very poorly. It’s no secret that the mayor and I have not seen eye to eye on many things. But I think this should have been, like I said earlier, handled from the very beginning.”
