Community Safety in District 7: A Focus on Mental Health and Crime Prevention

The urgent need for better mental health care in the criminal justice system was repeatedly expressed. People shared stories of loved ones facing legal issues due to mental health. Town prioritizes early treatment of mental health to prevent crime.

William McManus, a prominent San Antonio law enforcement figure, gave an optimistic speech. He was pleased with the city council’s decision to hire over 100 additional police officers next year. Chief McManus stressed that new hires would join the growing mental health unit. The goal was to enhance public safety by prioritizing the whole person, including mental health, as it helps prevent crime.

Bexar County DA Joe Gonzales discussed bail. He helped people understand the criminal justice system by answering clearly and patiently. Gonzales asked for more help to fight crime. He emphasized the need for attentive bystanders to provide accurate information to the police. He said thieves would struggle to escape if people collaborated.

Maria Fernandez echoed popular sentiments. She attended the meeting, hoping for answers from DA Gonzales. Despite his helpful answers, she still felt there was much she didn’t know about criminal justice. Maria vowed to attend all upcoming group meetings. She was driven and determined to find the missing puzzle pieces and improve her town.
