Civic Park at Hemisfair: Downtown San Antonio has a new gem, with Phase 1 of Civic Park at Hemisfair now open. This seven-acre urban oasis is a hit among both locals and tourists. It offers lovely water features, picturesque walks, and abundant green spaces.
Meredith Balzen, head of external relations at Hemisfair, says that the park has come back to life: “Now that people are actually walking and moving through the space, it feels like home, like the place that the people of San Antonio asked for.”
Civic Park is on East Nueva Street near Yanaguana Garden. It has more than 130 trees, an exciting water channel, and a large grassy area that can be used for events and music.
Balzen says, “Come with your big picnic blankets and enjoy the beautiful green grass we will have all year.” This makes the vast yard even more appealing. The park also has a lovely tree-lined path that goes from north to south and leads to the Five Springs, which are beautiful water features at the park’s south end where families can enjoy the cool water and laid-back atmosphere.
Civic Park’s official big opening party won’t happen for a few more days. Still, locals like Priscilla Sanchez and her family already take advantage of everything it offers. They like how the park makes living in downtown San Antonio easy and fun, where there are many fun things to do on the weekends, like music and festivals.
The changes being made to Hemisfair are only in the first stage. Phase 2 of the changes to Civic Park should be done by next year. Balzen talks about the upcoming building projects, including the Zocalo, a hardscape area north of the Great Lawn, and a park between South Alamo Street and Market Street.

These developments were carefully planned to make people feel comfortable and look nice. They have trees that provide shade and a lookout where you can see the painting on the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.
With its many trees and water features, Civic Park shows that it cares about the environment and fits in well with the River Walk.
Balzen emphasizes the park’s commitment to sustainability by saying, “Having water and trees right here in downtown San Antonio was so important to us.”
Civic Park’s first event, Jazz’SAlive, is the start of a busy future where people from San Antonio can enjoy this beautiful urban haven.
Balzen says, “The fact that we came back from the 1968 World’s Fair felt like a win for our whole downtown San Antonio community. We love having guests and giving them new adventures.
