Christmas Challenges and Cheer: “BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. Christmas is on the horizon, bringing cooler temperatures to Baldwin County. However, for Fish River Trees owner Steve Mannhard, this year has been anything but easy.
Describing it as a “challenge,” Mannhard, who has been growing Christmas trees on his Summerdale farm since 1981, faced unprecedented difficulties this summer. The scorching heat, with temperatures reaching 100 degrees and 80-degree nights, caused the trees to halt their growth.
In the farm’s 42-year history, Mannhard had never encountered a drought of this magnitude, and the lack of rain took a toll on his business. The constant worry about rainfall became a daily concern, with Mannhard reflecting, “Is it ever going to rain again?”
Despite the hardships, around September, Mannhard observed a positive shift as new growth emerged on the trees.
Now, with cooler temperatures prevailing, Mannhard diligently waters the trees with sprinklers and hoses, ensuring they are ready for customers when Fish River Trees officially opens on Nov. 18.
For Mannhard, the challenges are outweighed by the joy he witnesses when families visit the farm. The excitement of children running through the rows of trees makes the hard work worthwhile.
While taller trees may be scarce this year, those seeking trees under 8 feet are in luck.”
