Casey Thompson Extra Quarter: FAU Quarterback Secures 7th College Football Season with Medical Waiver

Casey Thompson Extra Quarter: Florida Atlantic quarterback Casey Thompson has received a medical hardship waiver, granting him an additional year of eligibility, marking his seventh season in college football, as reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Thompson, in his first year with FAU, faced a setback after playing three games with the Owls, sustaining a torn ACL that prematurely ended his season. The quarterback’s collegiate journey began at Texas, followed by a stint at Nebraska. He entered the transfer portal again, eventually landing at Florida Atlantic, where he reunited with former Longhorns coach Tom Herman.

Originally a four-star recruit in the 2018 cycle, Thompson committed to Herman during his tenure as Texas’ head coach. Over four years in Austin, including a redshirt freshman season, he amassed 2,422 passing yards and 30 touchdowns. Thompson then transferred to Nebraska in 2022, starting 10 games and throwing for 2,407 yards.

However, changes in coaching staff led Thompson back to the transfer portal, ranking as the No. 23 quarterback transfer in the 2023 cycle, per the On3 Transfer Portal Rankings. Joining forces with Herman once again at FAU, Thompson’s return was met with enthusiasm.

“A healthy Casey Thompson is better than anything that FAU has had here for quite some time,” Herman expressed on the ESPN College GameDay podcast before the season. He emphasized the significance of longstanding relationships in recruiting, as Thompson, initially recruited eight years ago, felt comfortable rejoining the program for his final college football year.

In the three games before his injury, Thompson showcased his skills for Florida Atlantic, completing 50 of 79 passes for 509 yards, five touchdowns, and five interceptions. Now, with the medical hardship waiver granting him an extended eligibility, Thompson is set to gear up for his seventh season in the realm of college football.
