BTS Members RM Jimin V and Jung Kook: Begin Military Service Amid Global Hiatus

BTS Members RM Jimin V and Jung Kook: BTS, reveals that four additional members—RM, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook—are set to commence their compulsory military service, marking a significant development during the group’s ongoing hiatus.

In a statement released by the band’s music label BIGHIT Music, it was announced, “We would like to inform our fans that RM, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook have initiated the military enlistment process.” The artists are now gearing up to fulfill their military service duties, with further updates promised in due course.

BIGHIT Music extended a heartfelt request for continued love and support from fans during this period, emphasizing the company’s unwavering commitment to providing support for the artists until their safe return.

In South Korea, where military service is mandatory, the majority of able-bodied men are required to serve in the army for 18 months before reaching the age of 28. A 2020 bill by South Korea’s parliament allows pop stars, particularly those who excel in popular culture and art, to defer their service until the age of 30.

The strategic timing for BTS’s military service was announced in October 2022, starting with Jin, the oldest member of the group. This decision coincided with a temporary break from group musical activities to pursue solo projects, as revealed in June of the same year.

The record label emphasized its careful consideration of the timing of the band’s military service, aiming to respect the needs of the country and the well-being of the members. BTS, formed in 2013, has garnered global fame with number one singles in over 100 countries and solidified its status as the fifth most streamed artist globally on Spotify in 2022, being the most streamed K-pop artist.
