The Birmingham Water Works Employee Association sent a letter to all eight board members outlining grievances about inequities in discipline, promotions, and salaries. The association emphasized that the vote of no confidence was a last resort, taken with hesitation after much discussion.

The letter, signed by Derrick Maye, the association’s chair, accuses senior managers, including General Manager Michael Johnson, Assistant General Manager Derrick Murphy, CFO Iris Fisher, and HR Manager Paul Lloyd, of creating an environment where employees fear for their jobs.

The association alleges inconsistent disciplinary practices, with instances of unfair penalties and firings. They suggest these actions are influenced by racial and preferential bias, deviating from company policies and being driven by emotion and attachment.

Rick Jackson, spokesman for the Water Works Board, stated that executive leadership will meet with employees to address the raised issues and seek a timely resolution. He emphasized the importance of open and transparent communication, with a goal to meet the needs of employees and maintain a positive working environment.

Maye had reportedly received an “evasive” response from Johnson when seeking data on disciplinary actions and a racial breakdown of affected workers.

The employee association also expressed concerns about the utility’s new pay scales, asserting that they unfairly benefit the highest-paid employee more than lower-wage workers.

In response, Jackson mentioned the water works’ efforts over the past year to enhance its employee culture, including improvements to salary structures, initiatives for employee retention, and recruitment of new talent.

This isn’t the first time Water Works employees have taken a vote of no confidence; a similar letter of grievance was issued in 2005, citing eroding morale and concerns about the HR department.
