Birmingham Boosts Crime-Fighting Arsenal: BIRMINGHAM, Ala.  Birmingham is taking steps to bolster the capabilities of its Real Time Crime Center, aiming to enhance the city’s crime-fighting efforts.

The city’s Mayor’s Office provided an update on Tuesday, outlining future plans to strengthen this crucial resource. Originating as a pilot program in 2018 through collaboration with Alabama Power, the Real Time Crime Center has been instrumental in solving over 1,000 investigations.

With six months remaining in the original agreement, Alabama Power has committed to essential upgrades for the center. The plan includes upgrading the existing 95 cameras with the latest technology and installing additional cameras in crime hotspots. Birmingham’s Chief Operating Officer, Chaz Mitchell, highlighted the significance of this partnership, noting that the new agreement would extend for 60 months, with a monthly cost increase from $59,000 to $80,000.

“It’s a win-win for the city of Birmingham to have all these upgrades and additional cameras in the field for our BPD, and I just thank Alabama Power and thank you to them for coming to the table as a partnership to solve some of our biggest things in the city, which is crime,” expressed Mitchell.

City leaders emphasized that the Real Time Crime Center will transition to 24/7 operations, a strategic move aimed at further reducing crime in the city. The commitment to ongoing improvements reflects a dedication to enhancing public safety and the effectiveness of law enforcement efforts in Birmingham.
