Best Hospital Rankings: U.S. News and World Report’s Latest Updates and Controversies

Best Hospital Rankings: U.S. News & World Report issued its 34th consecutive “Best Hospital” rankings on Tuesday. Due to school and government criticism, their ranking system was altered.

This year’s survey ranked 484 regional hospitals using 30 medicinal and surgical treatments. 22 hospitals made the national “Honor Roll.” It’s intriguing that the scores didn’t rank. They presented the findings as a “Honor Roll” without order.

User polls suggested that specializations, conditions, methods, and closeness to an area should be given more weight than national rankings, so the technique was adjusted. This focus was chosen when it became apparent. U.S. News chief analyst and managing editor Ben Harder said this adjustment had been considered for a time.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, NYU Langone Hospitals, Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, and Johns Hopkins Hospital are among the “Honor Roll” hospitals. Other notable hospitals include NYU Langone, Cleveland Clinic, and Johns Hopkins Hospital. Three places joined the “Honor Roll” this year:

Manhasset is home to North Shore University Hospital at Northwell Health.  UC San Diego Health hospitals LaJolla and Hillcrest. UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

These hospital rankings come amid a nationwide discussion over how effective, clear, and fair techniques like these are. San Francisco’s city attorney investigated U.S. News in June. Bias, faulty techniques, and hidden money prompted the city attorney’s probe. The University of Pennsylvania Health System decided to withdraw from the annual “Best Hospitals” rankings, demonstrating the need for greater transparency.

Kevin Mahoney, CEO of the University of Pennsylvania Health System, is unconvinced despite U.S. News’ July focus on health equality and outpatient results. He considered scoring methods were too simplistic to evaluate modern medical treatments.

Hospital rankings are one of the few ways patients may easily compare hospitals, despite their many flaws. These ranks aren’t realistic, but they can help patients evaluate hospitals. Quality care and patient safety specialist Michael Millenson explained this effectively.
